In Norwegian, comics aren’t comics, they’re drawn series (tegneserier). That’s a more proper name that doesn’t carry the connotation “this is silly, nonserious stuff designed to make you laugh.” I don’t read a lot of serious comics—I’ve never read Maus, for instance—but I’m a firm believer in the potential for telling serious stories in the medium. I recently read Logicomix, an intellectual biography of Bertrand Russell in comic form. This isn’t a review, simply a recommendation: if you haven’t read it, check it out. If anyone knows of any must-read graphic novels, I’d appreciate it if you gave me a hint.
