From Polyarnye Nochi by Simon Roberts. Photographs from Northern Russia during the polar night, when the Sun never properly rises above the horizon. During this time, the blue hour just after sunset—which can be just as potent visually as the golden hour of sunset—is stretched to cover half the day. (Here in Norway, less poetically, we call this time mørketid, literally dark time. Tromsø has mørketid from late November to mid-January. It’s also prime time for seasonal affective disorder.)
